Bringing a New Puppy Home: A First-Time Owner's Checklist

Bringing a New Puppy Home: A First-Time Owner's Checklist

There's nothing quite like the day you bring a new puppy home. Those wobbly first steps across the kitchen floor, the tiny yawns, the way they fall asleep mid-play β€” it melts you completely. But if you're a first-time puppy owner, it's also perfectly normal to feel a flutter of 'am I ready for this?'. The good news: a little preparation goes a long way, and this gentle checklist will help you feel calm and confident from day one.

What to buy before bringing a new puppy home

Getting your essentials sorted before the big day means you can focus on cuddles, not shopping trips. Here's a simple new puppy shopping list for first-time owners:

  • A cosy crate and a soft, washable bed for safe sleeping and downtime.
  • Puppy-appropriate food (ideally the same brand the breeder used, to avoid tummy upset).
  • Food and water bowls β€” non-slip is best for enthusiastic eaters.
  • A lightweight collar and a fixed-length lead for those first little walks.
  • A personalised ID tag with your phone number β€” more on why this matters below.
  • Safe chew toys to soothe teething gums and save your furniture.
  • Puppy pads, poo bags and an enzymatic cleaner for the inevitable accidents.

Your new puppy's first night at home

The first night with a new puppy can be a broken one β€” they've just left their mum and littermates, so a few whimpers are completely normal. Keep their sleeping space warm and close by, pop in a soft toy or a gently ticking clock for comfort, and resist the urge to rush over at every squeak. Calm, consistent reassurance helps your puppy learn that home is a safe, happy place.

Settling a new puppy into your home in the first week

Those early days are all about gentle routine. Keep mealtimes, toilet breaks and naps predictable, introduce new sights and sounds slowly, and give your puppy plenty of quiet time β€” they sleep far more than you'd expect. Start simple, positive training early (their name, 'sit', coming when called) using tiny treats and lots of praise. Short and sweet always beats long and overwhelming for a young puppy.

Puppy-proofing your home

Curious noses get everywhere, so puppy-proofing your home before they arrive is well worth the effort. Tuck away trailing cables, move houseplants and cleaning products out of reach, block off stairs with a gate, and pop shoes and small chewable items behind closed doors. Think of it like baby-proofing β€” if it's at nose height, it's fair game to a teething pup.

Keeping your new puppy safe from day one

This is the one every new puppy owner should read twice. Puppies are little escape artists β€” a door left ajar or a gap in the fence is all it takes. While microchipping is a legal requirement and hugely important, it can only be read by a vet or shelter. A clear, personalised puppy ID tag works instantly: whoever finds your pup can read your number and call you straight away.
